Grant van Velden has been an extraordinary “Maroon Machine". He started his journey at Maties in 2005 as a first-year Sport Science student. He went on to equip himself with qualifications that included a master's degree, specializing in sports vision and decision training. His qualifications and experience are scarce skills in sport, not just higher education sport, but also in the South African sport environment.
Grant has been part and parcel of the full Maties Sport evolution from the Centre for Human Performance Sciences through to the establishment of the Maties Sports High-Performance Unit, growing from two staff members to the ten members we have today.
Grant heads up the Sport Technology and Training Innovations Unit, working with 11 high-performance teams, and five strength and conditioning coaches, ensuring they are empowered with knowledge through relevant data. Considering our track record, especially during 2022, Grant's work is vital to ensure success on and off the fields and courts.
2022 has been a very successful year for Grant as the Strength and Conditioning coach of Maties Cricket, as he played a crucial role in the preparation and performance of the team to win the first-ever Varsity Sports Cricket for Stellenbosch University.
