'Sustainable Production

How Can We Make Ecological Sustainability a Competitive Advantage'

Datum:                Dinsdag, 20 Februarie 2018

Tyd:                      13:00 – 14:00

Plek:                     Universiteit Stellenbosch Biblioteek (JS Gericke Biblioteek) Ouditorium

More about the lecture:

One of the biggest challenges for industrialized economies and emerging markets alike is achieving economic growth and ecological sustainability at the same time. This requires a fundamental change in the way that industry produces goods, in view of the impact that current production patterns have on environmental pollution, climate change and resource scarcity. In this context, sustainable production is defined as the creation of goods and services using processes and systems that are non-polluting, conserve energy and natural resources, while being economically viable and safe for workers, communities, and consumers.

This lecture presents a series of Fraunhofer technologies and current research projects that contribute to achieving the goal of sustainable production.

It outlines key technologies that help boost resource efficiency in the production process, as well as solutions for the substitution of rare natural resources that are key for industrial production. A further emphasis is made on technological developments that significantly improve energy efficiency in manufacturing processes and go hand in hand with the »Industry 4.0« approach. Finally, recycling technologies and current research that enables the shift towards a circular economy are presented.

For all these different approaches, both digitalisation and biologicalisation are important enablers. In this context, the new trend of biologicalisation describes the increasing integration of principles, resources and processes of nature in technological developments.
