Regulations

‘In the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, the University may confer the degree of Master of Medicine upon a student if - a period of not less than four or five years (depending upon his major subject) has elapsed since his first registration for the said degree, provided that such first registration shall have taken place - after a period of not less than two years or one year (depending upon his major subject) had elapsed since the  conferment upon him by the University of the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and of Bachelor of Surgery, or since his having obtained some other degree or qualification deemed by Senate to be of an adequate standard; and after he has registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a medical practitioner; In the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, the University may confer the degree of Master of Medicine upon a student if - a period of not less than four or five years (depending upon his major subject) has elapsed since his first registration for the said degree, provided that such first registration shall have taken place - after a period of not less than two years or one year (depending upon his major subject) had elapsed since the conferment upon him by the University of the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and of Bachelor of Surgery, or since his having obtained some other degree or qualification deemed by Senate to be of an adequate standard; and after he has registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a medical practitioner’ (GENERAL CALENDER).

REGISTRATION OFFICE: takes place through the faculty Office

REGISTRATION DATES:          
First semester:             January to March
Second semester:       June to July


Supervision and examination

  • Each Department/ Division/ Centres appoint possible supervisor/s for students. 
  • Department/ Division/ Centres appoint examiners through University structures.
  • NOTE: Intention to submit should be communicated to Doctoral office nicolinecockrell@sun.ac.za 6 months prior to official examination.
  • Students are to submit TWO (2) bound copies for examination together with the thesis release form signed by the Supervisor.
  • It is the responsibility of the student and supervisor to upload the dissertation on SunLearn.

Due dates for submission of doctoral dissertation for examination
  • 1 September for Decemeber graduation
  • 1 December for March graduation
