Elective Student Programme

Thank you for your interest in the rotating through the Elective Student Programme of the Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care, Tygerberg Hospital.​

It is always good to know where you find yourself, so here is a bit of background about the hospital. Tygerberg Hospital is a tertiary hospital located in Parow, Cape Town. The hospital was officially opened in 1976 and it is the largest hospital in the Western Cape and the second largest hospital in South Africa. It acts as a teaching hospital in conjunction with Stellenbosch University's Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. 

Anaesthesiology is the field of medicine that is dedicated to treat patients in a dynamic setting while ensuring patient safety before, during, and after surgery. The scope of practice also includes working in intensive care units as well as in a pain clinic. Anaesthesiology trains its physicians in perioperative medicine, critical care and management of both acute and chronic pain.

The Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care is a diverse department offering clinical services at Tygerberg hospital and the district hospitals in the eastern metro of the City of Cape Town.  In addition to Critical care, pain management and peri-operative medicine services, the department also provides Anaesthesia services for a wide range of surgical specialities including:   

  • General surgery (Abdominal surgery, Breast and Endocrine, Trauma)
  • Plastic surgery
  • Cardiothoracic
  • Paediatric
  • Ear nose and throat
  • Orthopaedics
  • Obstetrics
  • Gynaecology
  • Urology
  • Ophthalmology

During your time in this department you will get the opportunity to actively take part in the perioperative care of patients as well as to develop clinical and technical skills.

To help you with your application process Stellenbosch University has a dedicated team who manage the International office.  We recommend that you start the process a year before you want to do your elective visit as it may take some time to register with the Health Professional Council of South Africa and to complete your registration with the university.
