The Frederik Van Zyl Slabbert (FVZS) Institute was officially launched in March 2011 as one of the HOPE projects of Stellenbosch University. Through its program offering the Institute creates various platforms through which students and young people in general can expand their learning experiences and leadership skills. As such the FVZS Institute pays homage to a great (South) African leader, critical thinker, thought leader and son of Stellenbosch University, the late Dr Frederik van Zyl Slabbert.
The FVZS Institute currently boasts with 13 accredited Stellenbosch University short courses and 2 programmes. It currently serves more than 3500 students per annum (predominantly from Stellenbosch University). There is a growing number of participants from the University of Cape Town, the University of the Western Cape as well as other Institutions of Higher Learning in South Africa.
