Economic and Management Sciences
Welcome to Stellenbosch University

About

The Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) aims to be the leading research-intensive Economic and Management Science faculty in Africa, known for our excellent graduates.

As the largest faculty on campus with around 9000 students, we occupy numerous buildings on the main (Stellenbosch) campus, while the postgraduate programmes of the Stellenbosch Business School and a few of that of the School of Public Leadership (SPL) are offered at the Bellville Park Campus.

Our training for professional registration in specialist fields such as Accounting, Actuarial Science and Financial Planning enjoys national and international accreditation by professional institutes and our students' performance in external examinations is proof of the quality of our programmes.

In a similar vein our programmes in Industrial Psychology and Human Resource Management are acknowledged by professional bodies. In other disciplines, excellent quality of tuition is ensured by cooperation agreements; these cover matters such as the exchange of students and teaching staff, and joint research projects with internationally recognised academic institutions.

The Faculty vigorously pursues research excellence and capacity development. And we are therefore very proud of our NRF-rated researchers and the Research Chairs hosted by the Faculty.

Most postgraduate students study at the School of Public Leadership, the Stellenbosch Business School and the School of Accountancy. The Stellenbosch Business School was the first school from an African university to acquire all three international accreditations for business schools, namely AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA.

Celebrating a Century of Impact: Transforming the Economy and Society

Over the past 100 years, the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) has not only contributed significantly to the economic and management landscape of South Africa but has also been a proponent of social change, striving for transformation that is essential to progress.

From our humble beginnings in 1925 to becoming a leading institution in EMS education and research, our faculty has consistently strived to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate and influence the complexities of the economy. Our graduates have gone on to make remarkable contributions across various sectors, driving economic growth, fostering entrepreneurship, and promoting ethical business practices. They have not only excelled in their careers but have also championed social responsibility, making meaningful impacts in their communities. Our research and the outputs thereof have also made significant differences in policy, regulation and society.

However, as we celebrate these successes, we must also acknowledge the historical context in which our university exists. The university's journey has been marked by both triumphs and challenges, and it is vital that we recognise the complexities of our past. By doing so, we honour those who have paved the way for progress while committing ourselves to a future that embraces inclusivity, diversity and equity.

The theme of our centenary, "transforming the economy and society," encapsulates our vision for the future. As we reflect on our achievements, we are equally focused on the challenges that lie ahead. In an era marked by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, ambiguity and rapid change – economic shifts, technological advancements, and social movements – it is imperative that we continue to adapt and innovate. Our faculty is dedicated to fostering a culture of critical thinking and collaboration that empowers students to become leaders who drive positive change in the economy and society in South Africa and beyond.

We invite our EMS community to engage with us throughout this celebratory year. Your involvement is crucial as we recognise our progress while shaping a brighter future together. Whether through participating in events, sharing your stories, contributing to initiatives aimed at enhancing our academic programmes or research, or supporting students and outreach efforts, your voice matters.

Together, we can build on our legacy of excellence and impact – transforming not just the economy, but society as a whole. We look forward to your participation as we celebrate 100 years of commitment to education, innovation, and social responsibility on our exciting journey forward together.
