Socioeconomic inequality, one of the most pressing challenges facing South Africa, was brought into sharp focus through the actions of students across the country recently. As part of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences' sustained endeavours to realise our values and our vision of advancing health and equality in South Africa and beyond, we actively promote access to quality education and work hard to ensure student success. Through these efforts competent health professionals are produced – professionals who improve lives and contribute to a better society.
The FMHS Bursary Fund was established in 2015, and our Tygerberg Campus community of staff, students, alumni, industry partners and friends have graciously responded.
The bursary fund has since been renamed to the FMHS Ithemba Bursary Fund. While 'ithemba' has several meanings in isiZulu and isiXhosa, we take from it 'expectation,' 'faith,' 'trust' and 'hope'. The fund will provide critical financial support to students who do not qualify for funding via funding structures managed by the University, government and/or private entities. Ithemba is also synonymous with the HOPE Project of the late Rector, Prof H Russel Botman, and is a fitting name to promote his legacy and provide hope to students who otherwise would not have been able to continue their studies in the Faculty.
