They will also critically explore the impact of generative AI in the context of academic integrity, assessment design, and enhancing student learning.</span><span SU Teaching Fellowships 2025http://www.sun.ac.za/english/Lists/news/DispForm.aspx?ID=10944SU Teaching Fellowships 2025Dr Karin Cattell-Holden<p style="text-align:justify;"></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="font-family:raleway;font-size:14px;">Teaching fellowships were initiated at Stellenbosch University (SU) in 2009 to provide an opportunity for outstanding academics to develop their teaching expertise and to stimulate the growth of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning at the University. The University has awarded 21 fellowships since then. </span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="font-family:raleway;font-size:14px;"> <br></span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="font-family:raleway;font-size:14px;">SU academics who are currently holding a teaching fellowship are: Prof Debby Blaine (Faculty of Engineering), Prof Nicola Plastow (Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences), Dr Taryn Bernard (Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences), Dr Marnel Mouton (Faculty of Science) and Dr Mariette Volschenk (Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences):</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"> <img src="/english/PublishingImages/Lists/dualnews/My%20Items%20View/Teaching%20Fellowships%202025.png" alt="Teaching Fellowships 2025.png" style="margin:5px;width:396px;height:120px;" /><br></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="font-family:raleway;font-size:14px;"><br></span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="font-family:raleway;font-size:14px;">The University Capacity Development Plan (UCDP) will be funding <strong>three more</strong><strong> teaching fellowships from 1 January 2025</strong>. </span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="font-family:raleway;font-size:14px;">The fellowships offer eminent academics with a track record of involvement with teaching-learning-assessment (TLA) and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning support and opportunities over one to three years to enhance and share their TLA expertise at the departmental, faculty and institutional level. </span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="font-family:raleway;font-size:14px;">The core of a fellowship is a research project which could focus on any aspect of TLA, including macro-aspects such as programme or curriculum renewal, or more micro-aspects such as redesigning the assessment of a module or investigating innovative classroom interventions.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="font-family:raleway;font-size:14px;"> <br></span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="font-family:raleway;font-size:14px;">Prospective applicants need to bear in mind that the aim of a teaching fellowship is not to introduce academics to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. The literature argues that transitioning to responsive and contextually relevant curricula is an important strategy to equip students to be both clinically competent and critically conscious of the contexts in which they provide healthcare. However, little is known about how students understand social responsiveness and the implications for their involvement in reframing health professions curricula to be more responsive. </span><br style="font-family:raleway;font-size:14px;"></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="font-family:raleway;font-size:14px;">This presentation will focus on a qualitative study that explored the experiences of undergraduate final-year medical students regarding social responsiveness. </span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="font-family:raleway;font-size:14px;">Drawing on socially just pedagogies to offer insights into the student perspectives, the students expressed that the curriculum provided opportunities to engage with concepts related to social justice and equity. However, these opportunities were less frequent and were considered less valued when compared to biomedical knowledge. Furthermore, the cultures and traditions of medicine create conditions that position students as consumers of the curriculum. Nevertheless, students expressed a desire to be co-creators in the process of the transformation of the curriculum.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="font-family:raleway;font-size:14px;">As health professions education shifts towards advancing social justice, it is essential that the curricula grant students access to the type of knowledge and skills that will empower them to tackle injustice and become responsive to health inequities. This necessitates reframing what constitutes as powerful knowledge in medical education to include social justice. Participants are drawn from all South African universities.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><strong style="font-family:raleway;font-size:14px;">Two SU lecturers have been selected for the 2024-2025 TAU Programme. </strong></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="font-family:raleway;font-size:14px;"><strong>Prof. Elize Archer</strong> is an Associate Professor in Health Professions Education (HPE) at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Her roles in the Centre for Health Professions Education are overseeing the teaching-learning-assessment that takes place in the Simulation and Clinical Skills Unit, lecturing and supervising students in the Masters in HPE programme, and professional learning for lecturers in the FMHS. She has also supervised PhD students in HPE. Prof. Archer is currently the President of the Southern African Association of Health Educationalists (SAAHE).  </span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="font-family:raleway;font-size:14px;">Some of Prof. Archer's current research projects are focused on assessment and the teaching and learning of empathy and communication skills. For the TAU fellowship she will be working on developing interactive and hybrid courses for lecturers' professional learning. </span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="font-family:raleway;font-size:14px;"><strong>Dr Shantal Windvogel</strong> is a senior lecturer in the Division of Medical Physiology at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, where she lectures medical physiology to medicine and health sciences students. She is a research supervisor to Honours, Masters and doctoral students and module convenor for undergraduate physiology modules. Her research focus areas include the effects of nicotine exposure, indigenous plants, antioxidants, lung development, and the investigation of cardiovascular disease risk factors. She was appointed programme leader of the MPhil in HPE (MHPE) in 2023. Her doctoral studies indicated that many students may be unprepared for the challenges posed by master’s-level studies in HPE.
