2022
The most recent Rooibos Science Café was held on 8 November 2022 at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. The Rooibos Science Café is organised by the SA Rooibos Council and is an occasion to bring together Rooibos industry and commercial partners as well as scientists doing Rooibos-related research. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this was the first Rooibos Science Café held since 2019. Several members of the SU Division of Medical Physiology (Tygerberg Campus) and other departments at SU attended the 2022 Science Café, and research presentations were delivered by Prof Ben Loos and his group (Dept of Physiological Sciences), Prof Carine Smith and her group (Division of Clinical Pharmacology), and Dr Hanél Sadie-Van Gijsen, as well as by MSc students of Dr Gerald Maarman’s group (Sara Shaboodien, Carmen Marie Payne and Thatho Kgatla).
