Urogynaecology Unit
The Urogynaecology unit functions as a tertiary care unit at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Tygerberg Academic Hospital in Parow, Cape Town.
This unit focuses on urinary incontinence as well as pelvic organ prolapse and faecal incontinence. The unit functions in collaboration with the Department of Urology, University of Stellenbosch where a combined urinary incontinence clinic and pelvic organ prolapse clinic is offered at Tygerberg hospital. Also, a combined clinic with the Colo-rectal Unit from Prof. Goldberg at Groote Schuur hospital is offered to mainly address faecal incontinence problems.
It provides the service of Urodynamic studies for urine incontinence patients as well as specialized anal ultrasound for faecal incontinence at Groote Schuur hospital. Also as from 2011 perineal pelvic floor ultrasound for pelvic organ prolapse has been introduced.
The service of a sessional private physiotherapist with a special interest in pelvic floor disorders is available to our patient with the aim of a one-stop-clinic to include evaluation and initiation of concervative therapy on the initial visit.
Research of international standard has been published and also includes the training of pre-graduates, post graduate registrars and senior registrars. Also, fellowship training is initiated 4 years ago. Staff includes:
