Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology
Maternal & Fetal Medicine Unit - Obstetric Special Care Unit
The Obstetric Special Care Unit functions within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Tygerberg Academic Hospital in Parow, Cape Town. This unit provides a service to both outpatients and in-patients.
The unit manages high-risk pregnancies complicated by previous or current obstetric and/or medical illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes, cardiac conditions and recurrent adverse pregnancy outcomes. It provides a pre-conception counselling service where complex cases are evaluated before commencing with pregnancy. In this way couples can be advised of possible outcomes and modifiable factors addressed prospectively.
The unit enjoys good public-private support. It is managed by maternal-fetal sub-specialists and has close co-operation with obstetric anaesthetists, paediatricians, physicians, a geneticist and pathologists. Whenever possible women are managed on an out-patient basis with admission only as necessary. Deliveries are managed as tertiary cases in the labour ward or in the Obstetric Critical Care Unit.
The Obstetric Special Care Unit has a proud history of high quality research performed locally or in collaboration with overseas units. It forms part of the network within the department accredited for training in maternal-fetal medicine.
