Developmental Paediatrics

The Tygerberg Neurodevelopmental unit includes a tertiary diagnostic assessment centre for children with suspected developmental delay or disability.

As developmental paediatricians we work with a multidisciplinary team including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, audiologists and speech therapy. Our unit functions in collaboration with other related divisions such as Orthopaedics, Child Psychiatry, Genetics and Paediatric Neurology.

Regular clinics and Multidisciplinary Cerebral Palsy clinics are run throughout the year. We also offer outreach services for both training and case management.

Referrals are accepted from both public and private healthcare providers in the Tygerberg Children's Hospital drainage area. We see children with a wide range of conditions including cerebral palsy, hearing and visual impairment, language delays, autism spectrum disorders, developmental delays, intellectual disability, behavioural and learning difficulties.

We provide a diagnostic workup, standardized assessments, future recommendations, support and counselling. We liaise with both governmental and non-governmental organisations for children with special needs including the Western Cape Education Department.

The Unit is accredited by the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a training unit for the Certificate in Developmental Paediatrics.
