Paediatrics

Paediatric Neurology

Referrals come from the Western Cape, Northern Cape, Eastern Cape and Namibia.

A wide spectrum of neurological diseases are seen; including mental handicap, cerebral palsy, school and learning problems, epilepsy, infections, metabolic disorders, degenerative neurological disorders, neurological complications of other disease entities, e.g. prematurity, trauma, etc.

Other services we offer in combination with other departments are neuropathology service; EEG service (including neonatal EEG and ICU continuous EEG monitoring); electrophysiological investigations including EMG and nerve conduction studies; computerised continuous intracranial pressure monitoring; computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging; a back-up service consisting of speech-, occupational-, physiotherapists, clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, neurosurgeons and ophthalmologists who are essential to our neurology unit and muscle biopsies.

The Unit is accredited by the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a training unit for the Certificate in Paediatric Neurology.
