WORCESTER HOSPITAL

Worcester Hospital is a regional level hospital with a 340-bed capacity.

A regional hospital on a 24-hour basis, provides:

Information & Communications Technology

The academic building has a WoRGA (Computer User Area) with 18 computers, which is accessible on a 24hour basis.

Mr Chad Fairbairn will assist with all IT related enquiries and can be contacted during office hours at 023 346 7807.

All bedrooms have network points for students to utilise; the flat will also be equipped with network points.

Internet access is via a contract with an independent provider. Students get a monthly allocation, and when it is exhausted, you must contact Chad Fairbairn. Payment for this service will be introduced soon.

The SU network's standard fee is charged for printing if the Safecom printer is used. It will be moved to the WoRGA in the near future. To use the black and white printer in the WoRGA, students buy their own paper.

Worcester campus premises

Location:  Corner of Durban Street and the R60 main road to Robertson.

Route description:

Travel from Cape Town on the N1 to Worcester. Turn right into Riebeeck Street at the first traffic light on the N1. Continue south past several traffic lights and 4 stops until you reach Durban Street at a four stop. Turn left into Durban Street and find the campus on your right after a while

  • Postal and Street address:  1 Durban Road, Worcester, 6850.
  • Main access door to the hostel is in the centre of the hostel building on the south side.
  • Afterhours access is the Pell Street gate which is on the south side.

     Accommodation

    Information regarding student accommodation and other facilities at Worcester

    BOOKING:
  • Students register for accommodation by contacting their departmental coordinators at Tygerberg Campus who will forward all details to the SUNLOC office (Tygerberg). Only information received from these coordinators will be used.
  • Hostel fee information can be obtained from the SUNLOC offices.

     WAVERN HOUSE
  • Location: 38 Riebeeck Street
  • This hostel can accommodate up to 13 students. The shortest rotations and most junior students will be accommodated here, if the hostel at the Worcester campus is full.

    FACILITIES
  • All areas are communal and should be kept neat and clean at all times
  • Please be mindful and respectful of other students – their time, belongings and privacy
  • One locker per student for provisions – own lock to be provided
  • There are currently no sport facilities on site.

    BEDROOMS:
  • 4 bedrooms – to be shared by 3 to 5 students per room
  • 3 full bathrooms with shower, bath and basin for communal use

    KITCHEN:
  • Fully equipped kitchen with all crockery, cutlery and appliances
  • 4-plate stove with oven
  • Microwave oven
  • Fridges
  • Deep freezer
  • Braai-facilities are available on the ground floor and on the top porch.

    CLEANING SERVICE AND LAUNDRY:
  • Students are responsible for the cleanliness of their own rooms
  • Bi-weekly cleaning services of all general areas
  • Two refuse-bin systems will be used for recycling purposes.  The US supports a “think and live green" policy. 
  • Laundry facilities are available – students to provide own detergents and ironing facilities

    INFORMATION & COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY
  • 2 laptops to be used by all students
  • Wi-Fi available for academic purposes

    WORCESTER HOSTEL
  • Location: Corner of Durban Street and the R60 main road to Robertson
  • This hostel can accommodate up to 14 students. The shortest rotations and most junior students will be accommodated here, if the hostel at the Worcester campus is full.

  • Please be mindful and respectful of other students – their time, belongings and privacy
  • One locker per student for provisions – own lock to be provided
  • There are currently no sport facilities on site.

    BEDROOMS:
  • 40 fully furnished bedrooms
  • 2 fully furnished bedrooms in the flat with two beds in each room
  • The built-in cupboard has 58 cm of hanging space for clothes.
  • There is space allocated for the student to place his/her own refrigerator (560mm wide and 880mm high at the most), kettle and additional eating utensils and tableware.
  • There is a shower, toilet and washbasin in each room.
  • Wall mounted heater
  • The building has the necessary wiring with a satellite dish so that students, who wish to do so, can have their own television and decoder in their room.  There are 12 televisions, one in each of the kitchen communal areas.

    KITCHEN:
  • 12 Self-catering kitchen units for 3 to 4 persons to share, plus flat for 5 students.
  • Fully equipped kitchen with all crockery, cutlery and appliances
  • 4-plate stove
  • Microwave oven
  • Fridge
  • Braai-facilities are available on the ground floor and on the top porch.

    CLEANING SERVICE AND LAUNDRY:
  • Students are responsible for the cleanliness of their own rooms
  • Daily cleaning services of all general areas
  • Two refuse-bin systems will be used for recycling purposes.  The US supports a “think and live green" policy. 
  • All items found by housekeeping will be handed in to the Logistics office.
  • The student will be informed of their personal belongings but should as far as possible take care to remove all items as cleaners will not be held to account for the students' negligence should items go missing.
  • Laundry facilities are available – students to provide own detergents and ironing facilities
  • Laundromat on campus – payable by student card

 Transport

  • Students must enquire at Tygerberg campus prior to their departure, should they need transport to and at Worcester. The Tygerberg Office will forward the details of all students who might require a seat on the shuttle to Worcester, to the Worcester logistics team.
  • If a student experiences problems with transport whilst in Worcester, Regan van Wyk, Naassier Kariem or Helta Jordaan can be contacted on 023 346 7814/7820/7803. This applies to the use of a shuttle service between the hostel, Brewelskloof Hospital, Zwelethemba and Avian Park.
  • There is parking available for students' vehicles on the site next to the hostel. The normal SU tariff is applicable for students staying the whole year (R1050 for 2015). Do not use the undercover parking. A fine of R140 per incident will be levied.
  • Students are responsible for their own vehicles, should they encounter car trouble.
  • Secure parking available for students with personal vehicles. Please enquire regarding the fees.

    Security
  • Two security guards will be on duty 24 hours a day.
  • To control access by unknown people, you must tell your visitor/s to phone you when the visitor/s arrive at the gate and then fetch your visitor/s.
  • Guard houses: students can call guards directly in case of an emergency or to accompany the student from WoRGA to the hostel. Tel 023 346 7849/8.
  • Burglar bars are in place.
  • Card-controlled access to hostel.  There is only one entrance; the door has to be closed after entering and exiting building. Chad Fairbairn has to be contacted for activation and deactivation. Please obtain all details from your Tygerberg department coordinator prior to departing for Worcester.
  • Emergency doors have sirens and are only for use during emergency situations. 
  • 24 hour closed circuit television screening has been installed on campus.
  • Emergency procedures placed in every room.
  • WAVEREN HOUSE: Alarm system with armed response in place. Access by remote control and key issued by Mr R van Wyk. 
  • ​​PLEASE NOTE:
    Your safety is a priority to the SUNLOC team and Stellenbosch University.
    Be alert and do not compromise your own safety under any circumstances.

  • Locks & Keys
  • Mr Chad Fairbairn will activate your student card for access to the front door of the hostel. This is pre-arranged and valid for the duration of your stay.
  • A refundable deposit of R100 is payable for a key to your room. Please inform Mr Regan van Wyk for your refund at the end of your stay. Should you have lost your key at any time during your stay, you will forfeit your deposit.
  • The university provides speciality “Reslock" locks for hostel rooms only

    Type of lock:  Mackie 40mm with yellow copper 6mm shackle, model 97030023 (Not in flat)

    Kitchen locker and wardrobe in bedroom:  own lock required, type recommended – standard, 40mm size.

    Movement to the hospital
  • The hospital is within walking distance, approximately 250m from the hostel.
  • There is a card access turnstile on the south side for pedestrians

     Medical and Clinical Psychology Services
  • Students with medical aid make use of the private system and doctors of their choice.
  • Students without medical aid can make the necessary arrangements for treatment at the Family Medicine clinic at Worcester Hospital (during the afternoons). Contact Mrs Helta Jordaan in this regard.
