Dr Ernst Baard van der Merwe

Dr van der Merwe is a registrar in ophthalmology. He was born and grew up in Windhoek, Namibia. After school he studied medicine at Pretoria University and after this he did his internship and community service (in general surgery) at Kimberley Hospital. After internship he worked in the orthopaedic and later in the maxillo-facial surgery department at Kimberley Hospital as a medical officer and did a diploma in oral surgery from Pretoria University.

After this he moved back to Windhoek and started working there, first in Anesthesiology before he started his ophthalmology career by joining the Ophthalmology department at Windhoek Central Hospital. He is now specializing in ophthalmology at Stellenbosch University and after his four year training he will want to go back to Namibia to work in the public sector there. He looks forward to be more involved in the outreach programs (cataract camps) in Namibia and eventually also international. He has successfully completed Part 1 A of the FC Ophth (SA).
