Dr Nicola Freeman is a consultant in ophthalmology. She grew up in the Western Cape and graduated in medicine at the University of Stellenbosch. She completed her internship at Victoria Hospital in Cape Town and after 18 months of emergency medicine experience she joined the department as a medical officer. She became a Fellow of the College of Ophthalmologists of South Africa in 2001 and has obtained a Masters of Medicine in ophthalmology from the University of Stellenbosch. Dr Freeman has been responsible for the sub-specialist paediatric ophthalmology service at the department since 2002. Her special interests are complicated paediatric glaucoma cases, retinopathy of prematurity, strabismus and paediatric cataracts.
