Principal Function

The principal function of clinical Ophthalmology is to provide the full spectrum of ophthalmic service to patients of the Tygerberg Academic Hospital and to provide training to the undergraduate medical students and post-graduate Masters of Medicine in Ophthalmology [MMed(Ophth)] students of the Faculty of Health Sciences. Tygerberg Academic Hospital serves a large urban and rural population, drawing patients from the Cape Town metropolis, as well as the Cape Winelands, Overberg region and West Coast. The service is exclusively based in the hospital because of the inadequate availability of technological support in the rural areas. The department is well equipped with modern apparatus and is constantly upgraded to maintain high international standards.
