Research for Ethical Datascience in sub-Saharan Africa (REDSSA)

The Division of Medical Ethics and Law at Stellenbosch University, in collaboration with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Center for Bioethics, secured funding from the NIH for a Data Science Innovation (DSI) project in Africa. This initiative seeks to engage diverse stakeholders in data science and AI research to shape governance policies for DSI Africa.

The REDSSA project aims to elevate ethical standards and community engagement in data science and AI in sub-Saharan Africa. By developing educational tools, conducting research, and building a network of bioethicists, REDSSA is set to improve the ethical landscape of data-intensive health research in the region.

REDSSA is co-creating data education tools with local communities, focusing on effective communication formats and languages. The project has reviewed literature on crowdsourcing public engagement and developed community tools to identify best practices in health data literacy. Educational materials, including posters and a video on health data flow, are being tested and distributed.
Looking ahead, REDSSA plans to produce ethics guidance on data sharing and AI, informed by interviews with data scientists and HREC members. In 2024-2025, it will establish the ELSI for Data Science in Sub-Saharan Africa Network (EDSSAN) to enhance collaboration and promote ethical standards in data science and AI.
