Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Graduation ceremonies to go ahead

Stellenbosch University (SU) is closely monitoring the developments surrounding the coronavirus outbreak that was declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organisation (WHO). There currently is no reason to cancel the upcoming eight graduation ceremonies scheduled from 31 March to 3 April 2020.

The University community, including graduands and guests that will be travelling to Stellenbosch for the graduation week, is encouraged to follow the general precautionary guidelines, and to stay informed via the institution’s website and official social media channels.

Graduands and guests who are feeling ill on the day, especially those with flu-like symptoms, are requested to rather follow the proceedings from home via live streaming at www.sun.ac.za/streaming.

Candidates who are unable to attend the ceremony can arrange for their degree, diploma or certificate to be awarded in absentia by completing the form on www.mymaties.com before Friday, 20 March 2020.

Candidates who are unable to attend at short notice, can arrange for the collection of the relevant graduation documentation after completion of all the ceremonies by sending a request to graduation@sun.ac.za.

SU has constituted a contingency committee consisting of various experts including staff from the Centre for Infectious Diseases (CID) and the Division of Medical Virology at the SU Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, the South African Centre for Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis (SACEMA), the SU Campus Health Service and others.

Universities South Africa (USAf) — the association representing all South African universities — announced earlier that the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) had briefed vice-chancellors about Covid-19.
