THE EVENT
The ABSA Cape Epic is arguably the premier mountain biking event in the world today. The top riders from all over the world (including 17 world- and Olympic champions) compete from 23-30 March 2014 over a total distance of 800km with 15 000m of climbing.
PARTNERS
Dr Hellmuth Weich, a cardiologist at Division of Cardiology, Department of Medicine, Stellenbosch University and Tygerberg Hospital saw this gruelling race as an excellent opportunity to raise funds and improve awareness of patients with heart disease.
Mediclinic has a long association with the Epic and the Division of Cardiology and partnered with us for this initiative. They will sponsor the riders’ entry fee, kit and provide logistical back-up.
When Mannie Heymans, considered by many in Southern Africa to be mountain biking royalty, heard of the opportunity to help with this good cause, he did not hesitate to sign up. Apart from winning the Epic in 2004, he has won the Transalp race in Europe twice and participated in three Olympic Games.
