The “Introduction to Emergency Medicine" module is a fourth-year module, more commonly known as the “EM Bootcamp". It is an intense 5-day module whereby concepts of emergency medicine are introduced to students. It is also a week used to showcase how amazing and diverse the field of emergency medicine is, by incorporating both theoretical knowledge by the means of didactic lectures, and several different practical exercise where students can experience emergency medicine hands-on.

The week focuses on introducing students to pre-hospital emergency medicine by hands-on experience in ambulance orientation, spinal motion restriction and wound care in austere environments. Students are also introduced to disaster medicine and get the opportunity to practice field triage and set-up of a command-and-control centre. Students are furthermore introduced to Aviation medicine in the format of a didactic lecture and a practical in a flight simulator. Two days are spent to emphasize and practice the management of critical ill patients and revise the emergency algorithms as produced by the Resuscitation Council of Southern Africa.

Students enjoy the hands-on experience and flipped classroom concept in a discipline that they wouldn't ordinarily have training and education in.
