Department of Military History

At the South African Military Academy, the subject Military History involves a focus and study of African historiography, African Military History, Conflict during the Cold War, and Conflict in the Post Cold War era.  All modules have a specific focus on the African region.

114 – General Military History to 1914

144 – The Military History of Africa to 1945

214 – South African Military History to the 21st Century

244 – The First and Second World Wars, 1914-1945.

314 – Contemporary Warfare

344 – Low-Intensity Conflict in Africa since 1945

 

Candidates qualifying and allowed to commence with postgraduate studies have the following modules to choose from.

At the honours level:

741 – Research Methodology (Compulsory)

742 – Philosophy and Historiography (Compulsory)

743 – Theory and Practice of Military History

 

Optional modules

744 – Military Strategy

745 – Military History of Africa

 

MMil in Military History:  The options comprise a full thesis or a structured qualification comprising modules and a thesis of 90 credits.
