New direction for SU

Key moments underway to submissions to Council on 29 April 2013

Since February 2012 there has been an extensive consultation process involving various university bodies to reach the point where important submissions, crucial to the University's future, will be considered by the University Council.

  • 27 and 28 February 2012: Presentation by Rector to staff and students on Stellenbosch University's Campus Master Plan for Facilities and Mobility.
  • 22 March 2012: Discussions by the Rector with Student Parliament on aspects of diversity and transformation.
  • 11 April 2012: Presentation by Rector to staff on progress with SU's HOPE Project.
  • 7 May 2012: Council discusses the Report on the Promotion of Equality, Diversity and Transformation in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Council note that there is a need for quantitative and qualitative information regarding diversity and inclusivity at SU, and requests SU Management to draw up a plan of action that will create a welcoming institutional environment in which equality, diversity and transformation will flourish.
  • 1 June 2012: Special Council discussion on Language and Diversity at SU.
  • 25 June 2012: At Council meeting, Rector undertakes to review the "Strategic Framework for the Turn of the Century and Beyond" as the University's guiding document.
  • 27 and 28 July 2012: At the Winter Institutional Planning Forum (IPF) the focus falls on a future perspective for the University. The global and local forces shaping the future environment within which SU will have to function successfully and sustainably are considered. The year 2030 is chosen as management horizon.
  • 25 September 2012: Council discusses IPF Report. Input given about the shape and size of SU, enrolment planning, the role of technology and virtual learning environments, global and African trends, diversity and transformation imperatives, as well as systemic sustainability.
  • 15 October 2012: The Student Representative Council (SRC) holds a public discussion about transformation, and the Transformaties Forum is established.
  • 4 November 2012: Rector's presentation to and discussion with Senate. Elements of new direction continuously discussed at previous meetings.
  • 8 November 2012: Rector and Vice-Rectors report to the annual Convocation meeting on the Campus Master Plan as well as decisions and processes of Council and Rector's Management Team.
  • 22 January 2013: Convocation discussion about draft residence placement policy.
  • February and March 2013: Rector makes presentation to and holds discussion with Faculty Councils and management.
  • January to March 2013: Further planning by Executive Management.
  • 14 and 15 February 2013: Consultation with top and middle management at summer IPF.
  • 15 March 2013: Rector's presentation by and discussion with Senate. (New direction, as it unfolded, was continually discussed with Senate at its 2012 meetings.)
  • 11 April 2013: At an extraordinary Convocation meeting, a motion in support of the new proposed residence placement policy is passed.
  • 25 April 2013: Consultation among the four universities in the Province – Cape Peninsula, Cape Town, Stellenbosch and Western Cape – on best practices in higher-education transformation. The Cape Higher Education Consortium (CHEC), Human Rights Commission and Institute for Justice and Reconciliation are also part of the discussion.
  • 26 April 2013: Rector's presentation to and discussion with SRC Executive Committee (also other meetings earlier during 2013 and 2012).
  • 26 April 2013: Rector's presentation and discussion with Deans.
