BURSARIES AWARDED AND BURSARY LOANS GRANTED BASED ON NEED
Virtually all bursaries and bursary loans administered by the Undergraduate Bursaries and Loans Division are allocated based on financial need. In order to qualify for financial support of any nature, a prospective student must display the potential to study successfully (i.e. gain admission to a study programme at the University). A continuing student must meet with the academic requirements as specified by the type of financial aid they have received during their studies at SU.
In these instances, the National Student Financial Aid (NSFAS) means test is used to determine applicants' relative need.
BURSARIES AWARDED AND BURSARY GRANTED BASED ON ACADEMIC MERIT
Besides need-based bursaries, we also offer merit based bursaries based on year to year academic performance. In addition to this, we also have the Recruitment Bursary to attract top Black, Coloured and Indian students.
BURSARIES AWARDED BY EXTERNAL DONORS
Stellenbosch University receives external donor funding earmarked for bursaries and loans. Bursaries and loans are awarded to both prospective and continuing students based on specific donor requirements and conditions.
BURSARIES AWARDED BY GOVERNMENT
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a government initiative focused on providing financial assistance to the poor and missing middle financial needy students.
For the next 5 years starting in 2018, NSFAS will also be responsible to administer the government's introduction of “fully subsidized free higher education and training for poor and working class South Africans".

The Ikusasa Student Financial Aid Programme (ISFAP) is government initiative to provide financial assistance to very poor, poor and “missing middle" students in scares skills programmes.
