All other bursaries and bursary loans administered by SU are managed in accordance with the specific conditions and criteria as set by the donors. These bursaries and bursary loans are allocated by the staff of the Centre for Undergraduate Bursaries and Loans, these allocations are verified by the University's auditors for compliance with the donor conditions, as are all other bursary awards. Students are encouraged to apply for financial assistance within the specified timeframe (1 April – 31 August of the previous year), to be eligible to be nominated for other funding.

The Ikusasa Student Financial Aid Programme (ISFAP) is government initiative to provide financial assistance to very poor, poor and “missing middle" students in scares skills programmes, including BAccounting, BCom Actuarial Sciences, Engineering, MB,ChB, BSc Physiotherapy and B Occupational Therapy.
ISFAP conditions require a fully wrap-around student support programme to improve the success and graduate rates of missing middle students, by means of academic and psychosocial support, as well as life skills training.
fee-adjustment grant (DHET)
The Department of Higher Education and
Training (DHET) has committed to implementing state-funded gap-funding grants
in the form of an 8% rebate for fee adjustments for students from families with
a combined household income of R600 000 a year or less. The gap-funding rebate is calculated as 8% of
both tuition and university residence fees.
Students who receive full-cost bursaries
do not qualify for the gap-funding grant (excluding NSFAS-funded students). Students
from Quintile 1, 2 or 3 schools as well as students or households that qualify
for social grants automatically qualify for the gap rebate. All other students
with a gross household income of R600 000 a year or less have to apply for
- Only South African citizens and citizens with permanent South
African residence studying towards an undergraduate or postgraduate
qualification in 2017.
- The applicant and direct family (mother, father, spouse or legal
guardians) must have a GROSS combined family income of R600 000 or less
per annum before tax deductions.
How to apply?
Some students will not have to apply for the grant, they will automatically be considered:
- Applicants who applied for NSFAS funding.
- All students who attended Quintile 1, 2 and 3 schools in Grade 12.
All other students will have to apply for the fee adjustment grant at registration:
- All applications will have to be submitted through completing the GAP grant application form.
- All applications must include certified copies of IDs of the
parents/spouse and/or legal guardians. Incomplete applications will not
- Parents, spouses and legal guardians will be requested to
acknowledge that they understand that personal information will be
requested and provided to third parties who will assist the University
with verifying income and that their signature to the application
constitutes express written consent.
- All parties (father / mother / spouse /legal guardians / student) must complete and sign the application.
- Students who are unsuccessful in their application may appeal within
14 days of the outcome of the decision by completing an Appeals Form
which will be loaded onto the University’s website.
All applications must be submitted, with supporting documents, at the nearest Centre for Bursaries and Loans.
Department of Labour Bursaries
Students with disabilities qualify for (apart from any other bursaries) for bursaries from the Department of Labour and are required to apply directly at the Department for these bursaries.
Funza Lushaka Bursary Scheme
The Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme is a multi-year programme to promote
teaching as a profession. Bursaries are available to enable eligible
students to complete a teaching qualification in an area of national
priority. Recipients of the bursary must apply on-line for the bursary in every
year. The recipient must also complete the placement information as
required in every year.
