Q1. Will you find me a job?

A1. NoJ. We are not a placement or recruitment agency, but we help students to prepare effectively for the job-seeking process. We also organise network opportunities with companies. Furthermore, we manage the Careers Portal where companies place job advertisements. We also send out targeted e-mails with job ads to students in the relevant degree courses.

Q2. I am a first-year student. May I use the services of the Unit for Graduand Career Services?

A2. Yes, you may. Although we focus on preparing our final-year students for the world of work, it is important to start working on your career goals and job-seeking skills from your first year. We especially advise our first-year students to attend the workshops.

Q3. I am interested in making an appointment to develop my CV. How can I make an appointment, and what do I need?

A3. Please read the programme for this year's workshops here and book your place for one. Should you still need help after you have attended the workshop, you can contact Thobeka Msi via her e-mail address stm@sun.ac.za to book an individual session. Please send her a copy of your latest CV in which all the necessary changes suggested at the workshop have been made and bring a hard copy on the day of your appointment.

Q4. I have an interview coming up and would like to talk to someone about how I can prepare for the interview.

A4. Please read the programme for this year's workshops here and book your place to attend one. This should not be a last-minute decision. Give yourself enough time to prepare. Unfortunately, we do not do mock interviews, but you can discuss some questions you might have with Thobeka Msi. Should you still need help after you have attended the workshop, you can send her an e-mail to stm@sun.ac.za

Q5. Where and when are your workshops presented?

A5. All our workshops are presented during lunchtime, on specific dates throughout the year. They are held at the Careers Office at 43 Victoria Street, situated behind the Conservatorium. For a complete list of workshops, please click CSCD Workshops.

Q6. What are the business hours of the Unit for Graduand Career Services?

A6. We are open from Mondays to Fridays.

08:00 – 12:45

13:45 - 16:30

We are closed on public holidays.

 

Q7. Do you charge a fee for your services?

A7. Most of our services are free of charge. We ask a minimal fee for our workshops. Please click on the following link for the workshop document Career Services Workshops, which includes the fees.

Q8. Should I take my CV with me to the career fairs?

A8. It is always advisable to take a few copies of your CV to the career fairs. If a company representative shows interest in following up with you, you may ask if he/she would like a copy of your CV.

Q9. I want to change the course of my studies and need to speak to someone.

A9. Please make contact with your faculty secretary in Admin A regarding your concerns and needs. You can also contact the CSCD/SSVO situated at 43 Victoria Street on 021-808 4707 to make an appointment to see a guidance counsellor.

Q10. I graduated last year and now need some career advice.

Q11. Are your workshops open for anyone?

A11. Our workshops are available only to students currently studying at the university.

Q12. I am looking for part-time/vacation work.

A12. Please visit our Careers Portal http://jobs.mymaties.com for the latest vacancies.

Q13. I need to speak to an academic counsellor and want to make an appointment.

A13. Please contact the CSCD / SSVO on 021-808 4707 or visit the centre at 37 Victoria Street to make an appointment.
