The Body as Archive: Women as Repository of History and Memory | http://www.sun.ac.za/english/Lists/Events/DispForm.aspx?ID=5890 | | The Body as Archive: Women as Repository of History and Memory

The Body as Archive: Women as Repository of History and Memory

In reflecting on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and on 30 years of democracy, we focus on the stories of Nomonde Calata and Seipati Mlangeni, widows of Bheki Mlangeni and Fort Calata who were murdered by apartheid security forces. Their testimonies at the TRC and their continuing journeys with this traumatic past open up questions about the relationship between trauma, history, and the body as an archive. Their presence and iconic TRC cries will open a dialogue about women's bodies as archives of trauma, history, and collective memory. For this conversation, Nomonde Calata and Seipati Mlangeni will be in conversation with Sisonke Msimang and Prof Tamar Garb.

More about our Panellists

Nomonde Calata and Seipati Mlangeni are two remarkable women whose lives have been deeply shaped by the brutal realities of apartheid. As the widows of Fort Calata and Bheki Mlangeni, both of whom were murdered by apartheid security forces, they have transformed their personal grief into powerful testimonies at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). Their ongoing efforts to address social injustices and preserve the memory of their husbands highlight the enduring relationship between trauma, history, and the body as an archive. Their stories serve as a testament to resilience and the power of collective memory.

Joining the conversation, Sisonke Msimang and Professor Tamar Garb bring their extensive expertise in storytelling, history, and art. Sisonke, an acclaimed author and columnist, delves into themes of race and identity, while Professor Garb, a distinguished historian of art, has extensively explored gender, sexuality, and post-apartheid culture. Together, they will engage with Nomonde and Seipati to explore the ways in which women's bodies hold and transmit the weight of history, trauma, and memory, offering a unique lens on the complex intersections of personal and collective experiences in post-apartheid South Africa.

To access Nomonde and Seipati's respective "TRC testimonies" and full speaker bios you can Click Here

To register for both events Click Here

Dance and Music as a Political Voice of Repair

In the evening session (17:00), Gregory Maqoma, South Africa's greatest dancer-choreographer, and Mandla Mlangeni, award-winning trumpeter, composer and bandleader, will engage with and respond to the earlier conversation in dialogue with the panel.

More about our Panellists

Gregory Maqoma, a world-renowned dancer and choreographer, began his career in 1990 with Moving Into Dance (MID) and founded Vuyani Dance Theatre in 1999. Known for his innovative work that explores cultural identity, Maqoma has collaborated with artists like William Kentridge and earned numerous awards, including the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and the 2024 Fleur De Cap Encore Award. Mandla Mlangeni, an award-winning trumpeter, was named Standard Bank Young Artist of the Year for Jazz in 2019. He leads several acclaimed projects, including The Tune Recreation Committee and The Amandla Freedom Ensemble, blending melancholic jazz with vibrant experimentation to celebrate African identity and social consciousness. Together, Maqoma and Mlangeni will offer their unique insights in a dialogue that connects the worlds of dance and music to the broader themes of the earlier conversation.

For full bios you can Click Here

To register for both events Click Here

|

Currently, his research interests include school dictionary use in the classroom, the lexicography of adjectives in Afrikaans monolingual dictionaries, comments on cotext in dictionaries, and lexicography of the "Woordelys" of the Afrikaanse Woordelys en Spelreëls. His experience in practical lexicography includes roles as co-editor of the HAT Afrikaanse Skoolwoordeboek (2009), editor of Van Dale Mini-woordenboek Afrikaans-Nederlands / Nederlands-Afrikaans (2010) and contributor to the 11th edition of the Afrikaanse Woordelys en Spelreëls (2017), the latter thanks to two terms of service on the "Taalkommissie" of the South African Academy of Science and the Arts (2011-2017). His introduction to lexicography was as Associate Editor on the South African Concise Oxford Dictionary (2002). Subsequently, he worked for the electronic reference publisher, Proquest Information and Learning, in Cambridge, England where he discovered the possibilities of structuring online reference texts and semi-automating editorial processes. In 2004 he returned to the DSAE and was co-editor of the Oxford South African Concise Dictionary (2010). In 2014 the DSAE began to embrace a thorough digital adaptation of its flagship historical dictionary. This required editor-defined, machine-readable data modelling as a foundation for the development of an enhanced dictionary architecture and, superimposed on this, a modern user interface design, resulting in the dsae.co.za Desktop Edition (2019), Mobile edition (2020), and its Visual Edition emphasise data visualisation (visual.dsae.co.za, 2021). Contemporary drama at the Adam Small Theatre Complex | http://www.sun.ac.za/english/Lists/Events/DispForm.aspx?ID=4313 | | Contemporary drama at the Adam Small Theatre Complex
Senior students of the Stellenbosch University Drama Department will soon be presenting Bryony Lavery's Frozen, a stimulating and thought-provoking contemporary British drama. Lavery is a renowned and award-winning playwright, and last year saw revivals of the play in London and other cities.

Frozen explores the disappearance over 15 years of Rhona, a 9-year old girl, and the devastating effects of this trauma on her mother Nancy and her family. At the same time, we follow the journey of Ralph, a paedophile serial killer, who is eventually caught and convicted of Rhona's murder. The play offers a nuanced and sensitive view of both the mother's and the perpetrator's perspective. A third character, Agnetha, is an American psychiatrist and academic who specializes in researching the backgrounds of violent, serial murderers. She is asked to conduct psychological examinations on Ralph. Her evaluation of him reveals that he suffered severe physical and emotional abuse as a very young child, with far-reaching damage as a result.

The play is staged in an intimate setting in a non-traditional way and explores how these three characters' lives intersect. Also present is a mysterious guard(ian), a fourth character, who guides us to consider the role of justice in our society. Uncomfortable questions are raised, such as who is to blame for violent, criminal behaviour of this kind? Is it possible in our society, where there are ever-increasing levels of abuse and murder of children, to forgive a person such as Ralph? Are we not all to blame to some extent if we cannot ensure that our children are raised safely and with love?

The production is directed by Sukki Hofmeyr and runs on 3,4 and 6,7,9,10,11 May 2019 at 20.00 in the Lab Studio, in the Adam Small Theatre Complex (formerly HB Thom).

Tickets can be bought online from Quicket or at the door. Please note that seating is limited. R70 for the public and R60 for students. There is a 14 age restriction for this production. A Bach-Hip Hop set combining contemporary performance art forms into something new and fresh as well as Mendelssohn's last string quartet will complete the second half.

From 2 to 6 July patrons can look forward to works by Max Bruch, Amy Beach (a gorgeous piece for flute and string quartet featuring Demarre McGill), Stravinsky (the famous L'histoire du soldat), Brahms, Ravel and Franck amongst others. Having just emerged from a particularly tough period for the performing arts due to Covid-19 in which we lost three established South African composers, Peter Klatzow, Allan Stephenson and Thomas Rajna, the legendary violinist Ivry Gitlis and cellist extraordinaire, Alexander Buzlov, and the two iconic SICMF patrons, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and Denis Goldberg, this particular festival will be very special one celebrating the lives and contributions of those passed in a nostalgic and deeply meaningful manner through music. Perhaps all the more significant is the resultant focus on rebirth, tenacity and continuity. To this end, the SICMF commissioned work Please Dream: In his words by Kathy Tagg will draw on poignant speeches delivered by our beloved Arch Tutu throughout his life.

The concertante evening on 7 July showcases Morschelles Concertante for flute, oboe and orchestra with Demarre McGill and Dwight Parry respectively, Tartini's Devil's Trill sonata with violinist Alissa Margulis, Solima's Violoncelles Vibrez! with Maja Bogdanović and Peter Martens as soloists and John Mackey's virtuoso trumpet concerto Antique Violences with Marco Silva.

The Festival Symphony Orchestra (8 & 10 July) conducted by Bernhard Gueller features soloists Alissa Margulis (violin), Kyril Zlotnikov (cello), Luis Magalhães (piano) and the principal clarinetist of the Berlin Philharmonic, Wenzel Fuchs. The Festival Concert Orchestra (9 July) conducted by Xandi van Dijk includes works by Beethoven and Sibelius as well as a prayer for Ukraine by Valentin Silvestrov and Peter Louis van Dijk's spoof, Beethoven or Bust, with Nina Schumann at the piano.

For full programme details including bios of the wonderful international festival faculty, please go to https://www.sicmf.co.za

|
Monteverdi’s Vespers | http://www.sun.ac.za/english/Lists/Events/DispForm.aspx?ID=4094 | | Monteverdi’s Vespers

On 1 and 2 September, Schola Cantorum in collaboration with the Chamber Choir Lucente (Munich/Germany) and the SU Camerata on period instruments conducted by Martin Berger, bring Claudio Monteverdi's Vespers to the Endler Hall.

This glorious Venetian masterpiece that bridged Renaissance and Baroque styles, is considered the grandest piece of religious music before Bach. Monteverdi can be thought of as a revolutionary, living at the end of one style period, and almost singlehandedly forging a new one through sheer force of will. He used the tools of the Renaissance, but created a new and intensely emotional form of expression, which we call Baroque.

The Vespers (“evening prayers") is a 90-minute piece for orchestra, chamber choir and vocal soloists, composed around Biblical texts — primarily the sensual love poetry from the Songs of Solomon. For these performances, solists include local and international singers: Caroline Nkwe, Lente Louw, Ulrike Malotta, Georg Poplutz, Christian Rathgeber and Felix Rathgeber.

These concerts are presented with the kind support of the GOETHE Institute, ProCoroAfrika Foundation, and ASK Afrika.

The performances takes place on Saturday 1 September at 8pm and on Sunday 2 September at 4:30pm in the Endler Hall, Stellenbosch.

Tickets for R140 (regular) and R100 (students and pensioners) are available now through Computicket and at the door.
