Philosophy
Welcome to Stellenbosch University

Welcome to the Department of Philosophy

The Department of Philosophy offers a broad range of courses at different levels of study. These form part of Stellenbosch University's programme-based teaching approach. Courses include ancient Greek philosophy, political philosophy, philosophy of religion, philosophy of language, critical social theory, phenomenology, African philosophy, and  many others. More information can be found under the undergraduate and postgraduate tabs.

Philosophy can be followed as a major or as a supporting subject in different B.A.degree programmes and can lead to further study and research within the subject itself, from Honours level onwards. It can be fruitfully combined with various other fields of study at undergradu ate and postgraduate levels, especially with languages, law, theology, journalism, the arts and the social sciences.

Why Philosophy?
The term "Philosophy" derives from the Greek words 'philein' (to love), and 'sophia'  (wisdom). To practise Philosophy is therefore to pursue the love of wisdom.
