Social Impact constitutes one of Stellenbosch University's (SU) three core functions, the other two being teaching and learning, and research and innovation. Each of the core functions has been allocated a Deputy Vice-Chancellor with management responsibility for his/her environment.

Apart from the Division for Social Impact, the divisions for Human Resources​, the Office for the Coordination of HIV, and Campus Health, corporate entities (eg. the University Museum and SU Woordfees​) and Legal Services all form part of the responsibility centre of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Social Impact, Transformation and Personnel. 

Strategic partnerships

One of the roles of the Division for Social Impact is to initiate and manage partnerships with the community. This facilitates cooperation among various parties and enables a two-way learning process. Service learning within academic environments, which implies linkages with research and teaching, constitutes another important component of social impact.

This responsibility centre also manages memorandums of understanding with several municipalities, as well as partnerships with, inter alia, the Department of Defence, ​the Department of Health, the Cape Higher Education Consortium (CHEC​), non-governmental organisations and provincial departments of education.

Staff success

The Division for Human Resources​ focuses on professional and streamlined service delivery in support of Stellenbosch University's strategic initiatives, including staff success, broadening the knowledge base, employment equity and diversity. ​​

Campus Health Service

The Campus Health Service​ delivers a professional medical service to students and staff, and ties in with Stellenbosch University's wellness initiatives. The unit's activities include dealing with injuries sustained while on duty as well as occupational health. It also enjoys local and international recognition for its excellence in the field of sports injuries.

Other institutional priority areas include the development of a Transformation Plan; reviewing the 2004 Sports Plan; institutional HIV and Aids coordination, as well as interim responsibility for SIGLA​ (the Security Institute for Governance and Leadership in Africa), one of the HOPE Project initiatives.

A wide range of initiatives and activities in various University environments form the basis for achieving short and long-term institutional objectives. The clustering of diverse divisions under the Deputy Vice-Chancellor​ for Community Interaction and Personnel contributes to Stellenbosch University's overarching objective of becoming "significantly different" and "significantly better". This is achieved through, inter alia, high-quality service delivery and innovation; promoting diversity and employment equity; implementing decentralised though campus-wide wellness actions; building sound external partnerships and broadening the knowledge base; improving accessibility; promoting excellence in sport, including Paralympic sport, and creating a diversified staff corps.

The constituent environments support the institutional vision, objectives and strategies of the institution, and make a vital contribution to the sustainability of Stellenbosch University as a world-class institution and respected knowledge partner, wanting to utilise its expertise to serve society and thereby fulfil its role as a national asset.
