​​Prof Henri Fouché and Dr Frank van Rooyen both serve with international organisations due to their expertise on maritimeme security matters. 

Prof Fouché (Extraordinary Professor, SIGLA) accompanied the SA delegation to the IORA work session in Colombo Sri Lanka (September 2018)  on establishing a standing working group on maritime safety and security within the Indian Ocean Rim Association.

Dr Frank van Rooyen (Research Fellow SIGLA) serves with the UNODC Maritime Crime Programme to counter maritime threats in the ocean off South East Asia in the Sulu and Celebes Seas in particular. 

Dr van Rooyen was selected to join the training staff of UNODC in South East Asia to train and educate seaferers exposed to piracy, attacks and robberies while serving at sea. Much of the focus is on the Sulu and Celebes Seas.
