"You made us all very proud. Thank you for being excellent ambassadors for Stellenbosch University and Maties Sport."

these words Stellenbosch University Rector Prof Wim de Villiers congratulated the FNB Maties Varsity Cup team on their performances in the Varsity Cup Competition.

The team lost in the final of the competition against UP-Tuks.

In turn captain Craig Barry thanked the Rector for his and the University's support: "It meant a lot," he added.

End of an era

The end of the 2017 Varsity Cup tournament also meant the end of an era at Steinhoff Maties Rugby.

For various players who were key members of the Maties Rugby family the final against Tuks was their last match.

Loose forward Kobus van Dyk, who recently made his debut for the Stormers, will remember his time at Maties with a smile. "It is most certainly one of the best groups I have ever been a part of…on and off the field. The friendships I've made will last a lifetime. It was a privilege to play for Maties and to start my rugby career with such a great group of people."

Kyle Steyn and Devon Nash were both offered six-month contracts by Griquas.

"I'm extremely excited about this new adventure. I did not expect this opportunity, probably because I did not realise the exposure the Varsity Cup tournament gets. I had hoped for something to come along, but didn't think it would happen soon," said Steyn.

About his time at Maties Steyn said: "Maties Rugby has an incredible history and to be able to play in the maroon jersey, build my own friendships and memories in the context of that history, and experience the pride and legacy that is Maties Rugby, is something I will always cherish."

Varsity Cup captain Craig Barry added: "It was a road full of blessings and lessons. My time at Maties shaped me into becoming a better person."
