This past weekend, the Steinhoff Maties Hockey men's team rewrote the club's history books … again.

With their victory over WPCC on Sunday, Maties won the WP league for a fourth consecutive time. This is the first time in the club's history that a men's team won the league four years in a row. Last year it was the first time that a team had won a hat-trick of titles.

To crown everything, for only the fifth time ever and the first time since 2009 Maties men won the USSA and WP titles in the same season. The other years were in 1979, 1980 and 1997.

It was a weekend filled with drama.

On Saturday, the league-deciding match between Maties and WPCC ended in a draw meaning that the teams had to play a final on Sunday to determine the winner of the league for 2016.

Sunday was not an easy day for Maties. The team lost their captain Dylan Swanepoel to injury early in the match and Tom Richardson also left the astro with an injury.

Alex Stewart took over the captaincy and the youngsters showed their potential. Finally with only a few minutes left in the game, a goal by Luke Schooling ensured that the final score was 1-0 in Maties' favour.

With the women's team also clinching the league title on Sunday, it was the ninth time that both Maties teams won the league in the same season. The other years were 1979, 1997, 2007, 2009, 2013-2016.
