Seven medals for Maties at USSA athletics champs

​​The Maties Athletics team returned home from the USSA Track and Field Championships with three gold, one silver and three bronze medals. The event was hosted at the University of Limpopo over the weekend (29-30 April).

Jean-Maré Senekal, who also performed well at the Varsity Athletics meets, won gold in the 400m hurdles and bronze in the 100m hurdles. This was her first short race of the 2016 season.

Nienka du Toit, the South African junior heptathlon champion, also returned home with gold while Jodie Sedras won the pole vault item.

Shaun de Jager was second in the 400m.

Samantha Pretorius won two bronze medals – one in the long jump and one in the 4x100m relay with Senekal, Janke van Wyk and Shannon Arendse.

Maties ended fifth overall.

The medal winners – De Jager, Sedras, Du Toit, Van Wyk, Senekal, Pretorius and Arendse – were included in the USSA team for the Confederation of University and College Sport Associations (CUCSA) Games which takes place in Zimbabwe from 1-6 August 2016.
