"We never forget our best teachers. We want YOU to become that teacher."

With these words new students in the Faculty of Education at Stellenbosch University were welcomed at a session hosted in the GG Cillié building on Friday afternoon (22 January).

The university's welcoming programme kicked off on Thursday night (21 January) with the official welcoming event in the Danie Craven Stadium at Coetzenburg.

On Friday, the dean of the Faculty of Education Prof Maureen Robinson and the coordinator of the BEd programme Dr Louise Botha met with the students to give them an overview of what to expect and to answer some initial questions.

"We received approximately 1500 applications and we only have space for 230 BEd students," said Prof Robinson. "There are more than a thousand learners who were very disappointed. Work hard and be aware of your privilege," she added.

"We are a South African university and as a faculty we are aware of the different education contexts. We are preparing you for the whole country and it is also your responsibility to prepare for everything."

Dr Botha told the students that she has "tremendous respect" for them.

"You are entering a very challenging career," she said.

She also addressed basic issues such as class attendance, practicals, language options, leave of absence, plagiarism and the grievance procedure.
