Mortality rates are a key performance metric used to measure the quality of care in hospital, however, due to the mix in severity of cases that hospitals see, these rates are often not directly comparable between facilities. We use a predictive model to estimate the probability of mortality of a patient based on patient characteristics. The expected value can be used to standardise mortality rates to enable a fair comparison based on the mix of patients seen. In this presentation I will explain the background and modelling principals.
