Webinar 4: Summative assessment and AI

The Division for Learning and Teaching Enhancement is excited to invite you to the fourth webinar in our AI² (artificial intelligence x academic integrity) discussion series, titled "Summative Assessment and AI." This engaging and informative online event will delve into the intersection of summative assessment practices and the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in the context of higher education.

When: 21 June 2023 at 1pm

Where: Microsoft Teams

Enquiries: cmh@sun.ac.za

More information on AI @ SU: DLTE website

The abstract:

The rapid advancement of generative AI tools, including ChatGPT, has raised concerns regarding the integrity of take-home summative assessment tasks. In this fourth webinar in the AI² Discussion Series, we will explore ways in which we can rethink our assessment practices in light of the evolving AI landscape. By drawing upon the SU assessment policy and incorporating the concept of evaluative judgement (Boud, 2018), we will delve into the fundamental purposes of assessment. Our aim is to consider the potential opportunities and risks presented by generative AI tools, as well as the impact on summative assessment tasks given students' access to such technologies and how we could respond to that.

Dr Sharon Malan, from the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, will share her valuable experiences of adapting the assessment in an Academic Literacies module. The webinar will conclude with a Q&A session, please come prepared with your questions.

The presenters:

Dr Sharon Malan is a highly qualified speaker with a PhD in Educational Psychology. With extensive experience in academia, she has been a lecturer and Extended Curriculum Programme leader at Stellenbosch University. She has presented at international and national conferences, focusing on topics such as assessment for learning and the development of problem-based learning approaches. Sharon's expertise lies in educational psychology, teaching methodologies, and optimizing learning experiences.

Dr Hanelie Adendorff is a senior advisor in the CTL at SU. She has a PhD in chemistry but has been working in professional development since 2002. Her career and professional development started with an interest in blended learning, but she has since included work in the areas of assessment, facilitation of collaborative learning, science education and, more recently, the decolonisation of the science curriculum. As a member of the Faculty of Science’s teaching and learning hub, she works with the Vice-Dean (Teaching and Learning) to enhance the status of teaching in the faculty. Since SU’s move to emergency and augmented remote teaching, she has been involved with institutional research on assessment.
