Dear Colleague and Student

Stellenbosch University’s (SU) Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) strongly condemns the malicious, hurtful and racist behaviour captured on a cell phone video in the Huis Marais residence on the Stellenbosch campus on Sunday 15 May 2022.

Although these specific events did not transpire on our campus, we, as a faculty, want to reiterate that we condemn racism and violence, and that we do not tolerate any discrimination, victimisation or bullying (including initiation) on our campuses.  Along with the Tygerberg Representative Student Council (TSRC), we stand in solidarity with our faculty staff and students against such acts.

We are aware of the detailed investigation that will determine the outcomes of this matter as soon as possible, and we call for due justice to be served as a matter of urgency.

It remains our commitment to create and foster a welcoming, inclusive and transformative environment aligned with our values. With that, we encourage all staff and students to continue to assist us by reporting any discriminatory behaviour in their various environments using the available reporting mechanisms. Such cases will be dealt with rigorously and decisively.

Staff and students at the FMHS can report discrimination and incidents of harassment on SU’s Equality Unit reporting platform by clicking here or sending an e-mail to unfair@sun.ac.za.

In case of a crisis after hours (between 16h00 and 8h00) the ER24 emergency service can be contacted on 082 557 0880.

Kind regards

Prof Elmi Muller
