A concept 'clean green home' designed by staff, students and recent graduates of Stellenbosch University's Sustainability Institute and the University of Cape Town has been awarded first prize in the City of Cape Town and the Green Building Council South Africa's (GBCSA) design competition.

The competition, aimed at students and professionals in the build environment, challenged participants to design a net zero carbon home that will be displayed in 2021 as part of the Cape Town Future Energy Festival.

The group, known as Team Mahali, is no stranger to accolades.

Late last year, the team clinched second place in the architecture category of the Solar Decathlon Africa in Morocco, an international design competition that challenged students to design and build sustainable houses powered solely by the sun. The team erected their solar-powered modular home in a solar village in Benguerir, north of Marrakesh.
