Stellenbosch University (SU) Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) student, Mac-Ray Mouton, coordinates and leads the 2017 accounting tutoring programme for the Funda Fendisa foundation. Mouton and his team are dedicated to after-school accounting classes at Makupula High School in Kayamandi.

They go once a week to Makupula and spend approximately two hours with the students. Mouton's team includes the following EMS students from SU: Stephanie de Wit, Bulelwa Zono and Linique Campbell.

The aim of the programme is not only to improve the marks of the students, but to assist them in creating a space where they can uplift and help each other achieve greatness. Mouton hopes that creating this space for assistance allows them to continue the programme and see the value of working collectively.

Grade 12 learners from Makupula High School, Kutlwiso Mzaca, Likhona Vandaba and Siyabulela Veke, have all been through the programme since their Grade 10 year. They all feel the programme has inspired and equipped them for University studies. They plan to study in the EMS faculty next year. Mathematics and Accounting educator, Mr. Nqindi encourages the programme and enjoys seeing the learners motivated and inspired to work harder.

When Motoun was asked if there is a need for University students to get more involved in tutoring programmes, his response was as follows: "There is a huge need. Not to generalise, but society often underestimates how much it can mean to spend time with a person, and when that time spent is used for investing in somebody else's future, the impact is phenomenal".
