Maties Judo became the latest Stellenbosch University team to win a University Sport South Africa (USSA) title when they came out tops in the USSA competition this weekend.

They competed against UP-Tuks, NMMU and UCT for the team title. UKZN, UJ and UFS were represented by individuals participating in individual categories.

Maties' Kenny van Romburgh and Petrus Loots won categories in the male individual competition while James Seccombe won the 81+ kg weight division in the male open competition.

Van Romburgh also received the award for best male newcomer while Jean-Mari du Plessis received the award for most promising female newcomer.

Maties Judo had dominated the USSA competition between 2002 and 2008 and also won the title in 2011.

Maties Sport manager Mthunzi Mashalaba said that although Maties had won the USSA Judo competition several times before, victory is always sweet.

"It is a testimony to the hard work and dedication of the club committee, head coach Oom Jan Olivier and the student-athletes. I'm very proud of them," he added.

Olivier, who has coached the Maties Judo team since 1970, was very happy with the team's result.

"I knew we had talent but I wasn't sure how strong the other teams would be," he said.
