Maties bring home four medals from African Champs

​​Matie athletes brought home four medals from the African Senior Athletics Championships held in Durban from 22-26 June. South Africa won 33 medals in total – 16 gold, 9 silver and 8 bronze.

Victor Hogan, who has already qualified for the Olympics Games in Rio defended his title when he won gold in the discus with a distance of 61.68m. This is ​his third African title.

Justine Palframan and her team mates took gold and set a new SA record when they won the 4x400m relay in a time of 03:28:49, edging out Nigeria (silver) and Kenya (bronze). Justine also reached the final of the 200m after winning her heat.

Justine said their gold medal was "unexpected".

"It was amazing and exciting to be able to celebrate together," she added.

Keagan Fourie, SA champion in the high jump, won silver with a height of 2.18m. He was beaten by Mathew Sawe from Kenya with a height of 2.21m.

In the men's 4x400m relay Maties' Shaun de Jager and his team mates won bronze in a time of 03:04:73. Botswana won the race in a time of 03:02:20 and Kenya was second in 03:04:25.

Samantha Pretorius narrowly missed out on a medal in the long jump. Her best distance was 6.33m while the bronze-medal winner achieved a best distance of 6.34m. Jean-Maré Senekal (400m hurdles) and Johan Kruger (hammer throw) also came fourth in their respective events.

While she did not finish among the first three, Nienka du Toit (who won four medals at the recent African Junior Athletics Championships) won the discus item of the heptathlon event.
