SU Transformation Indaba 2024
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Social Impact, Transformation and Personnel invites you to the 2024 Transformation Indaba. The indaba serves as a barometer for transformative engagement at Stellenbosch University (SU), as participants pause and critically reflect on transformation issues at the institution.
Background
The Institutional Transformation Committee (ITC), chaired by Prof Nico Koopman, will host a Transformation Indaba on Wednesday 23 October 2024. This is an annual event where SU staff and students reflect critically on the progress with the mandate of transformation at Stellenbosch University. The aims of the annual indaba are to advance interdependent quantitative transformation (things that can be measured such as the diversification of staff, students, and University decision-making structures), and qualitative transformation (things that are weighed and experienced such as discriminatory and alienating institutional cultures). This year's indaba is significant as it will take place prior to the approval of the institutional transformation policy, and whilst a new transformation plan is being developed.
Theme
The theme for the Indaba of 2024 is “Accountability Matters". The aim is to engage in conversations that would lead to concrete actions towards deepening transformation at SU and sustaining the gains that have been achieved thus far.
Topics
Conversations and reflections will be centred around accountability; more specifically:
- Its implications for social justice
- As a value espoused by Stellenbosch University and its significance for the institution's transformation journey
- Its implications for academic freedom
Keynote address The keynote address will be delivered by Prof Saleem Badat, research professor in the Department of History at the University of the Free State (former vice-chancellor of Rhodes University).
