Guest lecture. Subsea cable networks, port security and the lawhttps://www.sun.ac.za/english/Lists/Events/DispForm.aspx?ID=5654Guest lecture. Subsea cable networks, port security and the law
Subsea cable networks are hidden, but critical infrastructure and serve as fundamental links to connect continents, countries and communities. Africa hosts an ever-growing set of subsea data cable networks off its coast that serve the digital growth of African societies. Connectivity also drives port operations and raises cybersecurity threats and a host of legal matters. These matters with a focus on Africa are addressed on 27 September 2023 13:30-14:30 SA-time at a hybrid guest lecture at the Saldanha Campus by Prof van Niekerk (DUT) and Dr Ramluckan (UKZN). Enquiries to Francois Vreÿ fvrey@sun.ac.za. Aspects of an integrated maritime security strategy for South Africahttps://www.sun.ac.za/english/Lists/Events/DispForm.aspx?ID=5285Aspects of an integrated maritime security strategy for South Africa
The oceans continue to rival landward security as the importance of the oceans a communication, stock and flow resource increases. This attractiveness fosters legal and illegal maritime practices with the latter embedded in criminal enterprises and wars that continuously grow in scope and sophistication. This trend compels governments to bring their maritime houses in order. A national maritime security strategy serves as a foundation to securitise national maritime interests and South Africa must keep in step with this imperative. SIGLA is partnering with the Institute for Security Studies and the UNODC to address important aspects of a National Maritime Security Strategy for South Africa. This takes place at a seminar held at STIAS in Stellenbosch on 28 and 29 July 2022 with speakers from South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, India and the UNODC.

Webinar: Influencing military futureshttps://www.sun.ac.za/english/Lists/Events/DispForm.aspx?ID=5099Webinar: Influencing military futures
The Security Institute for Governance and Leadership in Africa (SIGLA) and the Institute for Futures Research of Stellenbosch University (IFR) are partnering in presenting a webinar on the afternoon of 30 November 2021 on positioning armed forces for future roles.

One critical uncertainty all armed forces face is keeping abreast of changing security threats alongside short-term political agendas bent upon incremental changes that become futile at critical points in time. Alongside a dwindling societal interest, a national perception of military stasis often arises.

This is a dilemma for soldiers, political decision-makers and society who must fund defence and expect political expediency and a combat ready defence force in return but find a military that does not boost confidence. One way to lower an impasse is using academic expertise as a catalyst for decisions to move national defence into the future.

To this end, speakers have been invited to share their views on history, how armed forces change and position themselves for future roles as well as matters related to the defence industry.

Dr Morne Mostert, Director of IFR and Member of the Club of Rome is the opening speaker followed by a panel discussion of three speakers led by Professor Lindy Heinecken (Stellenbosch University) with Prof Jo-Ansie van Wyk (UNISA) doing the closing.

Registration link

Enquiries

Prof F. Maritime cyber security: preparing for rough seas aheadhttps://www.sun.ac.za/english/Lists/Events/DispForm.aspx?ID=5027Maritime cyber security: preparing for rough seas ahead
Digital advances in the maritime sector can increase efficiency, but as the July Transnet cyber attack showed, they also expose the industry to new threats. To benefit from the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the safety of sea routes, ports and vessels should be a priority for African states. This includes protection against cyber attacks. The webinar covers maritime cyber security governance in Africa and emerging threats on the AFrican maritime cyber landscape. Webinar 2: The South African Defence Budgethttps://www.sun.ac.za/english/Lists/Events/DispForm.aspx?ID=4902Webinar 2: The South African Defence Budget

CEMIS and Sigla (Stellenbosch University) are cooperating to facilitate requests for a second webinar on the South African Defence Budget. The follow-up webinar is planned as a panel discussion comprised of speakers from political parties and academia and follows in the wake of the 2021 Defence Budget Vote on 18 May 2021 that is bound to reflect another round of deep cuts in defence spending to a level below 1% of GDP. This drop inherently implies that perpetuating status quo thought and incrementalism serve little purpose and the second webinar is an attempt to shift the focus on budgets and thought forward in time to consider alternative futures for the SANDF. The seminar's planned opening speaker is the South African Minister of Defence or her representative, while a Member of the Portfolio Committee on Defence and Military Veterans is invited to speak on a Parliamentary oversight perspective going forward. Also invited are one speaker from the defence industry, one from National Treasury with two speakers from academia included to comment on the budget and add a futures perspective on the armed forces.

Date: 21 May 2021 Time: 11:00-13:00 (SA TIME) Platform: MS TEAMS

Updates & access to Webinar 1: Conferences and workshops (sun.ac.za)

Registration link: https://forms.office.com/r/TwtGvuxBa8

Registration opens 14 May 09:00 & closes 19 May 2021 at 10:00

Enquiries

Dr M. UNODC-SIGLA Maritime security Round Table on Africahttps://www.sun.ac.za/english/Lists/Events/DispForm.aspx?ID=4477UNODC-SIGLA Maritime security Round Table on Africa
This public round table on 26 September, 16:30 at the Protea Hotel, Technopark, Stellenbosch takes stock of the debate on maritime security off Africa, and asks what the problems and potential solutions are: Why do African states and regions not undertake more efforts in managing and securing their seas? Is it because of all the other problems, from poverty, violence to corruption, that African states and regions are facing? Is it too difficult to convince voters that the maritime matters? Is it the lack of leadership or of knowledge and capacities? Are there too many administrative hurdles? Because of too little international support? Is it concerns over blue grabbing, that the benefits of the blue economy end up in the hands of big corporations? Or is it perhaps that AIMS and the Lomé Charter are badly drafted and just offer too little guidance and direction? Please RSVP to fvrey@sun.ac.za or 0825934225 by 18 September 2019.
