Professor Francois Vreÿ (PhD, Stellenbosch University) is a National Research Foundation (NRF) C1-rated researcher in Humanities/Social Sciences. He graduated from Stellenbosch University with a Masters in 1995 and Doctors in 2006 (thesis entitled: An analysis of the debate on alternative military futures: Explaining alternative futures for the SANDF). He is a former lecturer in the Military Strategy Department, Faculty of Military Science, Stellenbosch University and currently the research coordinator for SIGLA. His primary research focus is on irregular warfare and the rise of the maritime security threat landscape off Africa.
Prof Vreÿ also lecturers at the University of Namibia, Military Colleges such as the South African National Defence College and the Royal Danish Defence College (RDDC). He is a former editor of the accredited journal Scientia Militaria: South African Journal of Military Studies and together with Prof Thomas Mandrup (RDDC) runs the South-African-Danish On Strategy series of conferences – the fifth of which took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia during September 2016 and amongst others, culminated in the book publication : The African Standby Force: Quo Vadis.
