The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) introduced the Policy on the Evaluation of Creative Outputs and Innovations produced by South African Public Higher Education Institutions (2017) in 2018. The following categories are included in this policy:
 Creative Outputs- Fine Arts and Visual Arts
- Music
- Theatre
- Performance and Dance
- Design
- Film and Television
- Literary Arts

Researchers now have the opportunity to submit their creative outputs for the period 2021 – 2023 (n-3) to the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) for subsidy purposes.
The internal closing date for submissions of these outputs is 5 April 2024.
