Stellenbosch University (SU)'s Diversity celebrations, to be held from 29 September to 3 October, are not just about entertainment but also provide food for thought on serious matters. The theme of the Diversity Week is "Glocal is Lekker".

Staff and students can look forward to a lot of fun in the "Glocal Village" that will be created on the Rooi Plein. They are also invited to participate in thought-provoking "Critical hour Conversations" in the Marquee on the Rooi Plein from Monday 29 September to Thursday 2 October.

One conversation on a specific topic important to SU will be held daily from 16h00 to 17h00. Since there is space for only 20 participants at each conversation, booking is essential.

The issues participants will debate are inclusivity, students' in-and-out-of-class-experience, women in leadership, and possible barriers to community building on campus.

Dr Gillian Arendse, Head of SU's Centre for Mentor, Tutor and Leadership Development, will facilitate the conversations.

The complete discussion programme is as follows:

  • Monday 29/09: We belong here: Notions about the child of the farm worker and owner.
  • Tuesday 30/09: Academics meet student communities: What progress in creating welcoming spaces in and out of class?
  • Wednesday 1/10: Women in leadership: Must have or nice to have?
  • Thursday 02/10: Staff and the university hierarchy: Are titles and ranks inhibiting our sense of community?
