Universities will not take any blanket amnesty decisions on 2015/16 FeesMustFall transgressors- USAf

Universities South Africa (USAf)  issued a statement clarifying universities position in granting blanket amnesty to students implicated in the #2015/16 FeesMustFall protests at different universities in the country.

The USAf Board, which is made up of all vice-chancellors of South Africa’s 26 public universities, held a board meeting in June 2018 and discussed the way forward after a number of organisations and individuals have called for blanket amnesty to be granted to all students who were either suspended or expelled by universities or criminally charged by our justice system during the 2015/16 #FeesMustFall struggle.

According to the statement, there was clear understanding under board members that universities do not have any jurisdiction over those cases where students were charged by the State and were found guilty of criminal activities by a court of law. In these cases, the matter of amnesty has to be taken up with the Presidency.
