Presenters

Dr Wandile Kasibe (Public Programmes Coordinator, Iziko Museums of South Africa)

Wandile Kasibe graduated with a PhD in Sociology from the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 2020 and his thesis is entitled, “Museums and the Construction of Race Ideologies in South Africa". Kasibe is a critical and decolonial thinker who operates in the interdisciplinary realm of heritage, museology, fine art, sociology, photography, general politics and curatorial practices. Kasibe is a Chevening scholar who holds a B-Tech Degree in Fine Art (Border Technikon, now Walter Sisulu University), Post Graduate Diploma in Fine Art (University of Cape Town), MFA (University of Cape Town), MA in World Heritage (International Training Centre/ILO, University of Turin, Italy), and graduated with a master's degree in museum studies from the School of Museum Studies at Leicester in the United Kingdom. He has published in various publications, served on numerous boards including the National Arts Council of South Africa (NAC), The University of Cape Town (UCT) and many others. He is currently the Public Programmes Coordinator at the Iziko Museums of South Africa. 

Ms Mary Mbewe (History Lecturer, Mulungushi University)

Mary Mbewe is a PhD candidate in the Department of History of the University of the Western Cape, where she also obtained her Master of Arts in History and Postgraduate Diploma in Museum and Heritage Studies under the African Programme in Museum and Heritage Studies (APHMS). She was Keeper of History at Moto Moto Museum from 2006 to 2016, and now teaches history at Mulungushi University in Zambia. Her PhD project interrogates the desacralisation of female initiation ceremonies through the processes of ethnographisation and museumisation. Her research interest extends to missionary ethnography and the histories of anthropology in Zambia. Mary has held fellowships with the National Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences (NIHSS), The Remaking Persons Remaking Societies Forum (UWC cohort) and is a current fellow of Action Restitution Africa (ARA, UWC cohort).
