First-year students at Stellenbosch University enjoy comprehensive language and other support. Proof of this is Matie students' good throughput rates, writes Dr Leslie van Rooi*.
It is a challenge for university students around the world to overcome the hurdles of their first year of study. For Maties students, the picture looks rosier.
Stellenbosch University (SU) currently boasts some of the best throughput rates in the country and on top of that a record number of students graduated in the 2020 academic year. It is the result of support structures that SU has built up over the years to support students holistically inside and outside the classroom and to provide a university experience that is geared towards the development of well-rounded young leaders with an exploratory spirit and who can be concerned citizens and dynamic professionals in the workplace.
