It is with the heaviest of hearts that we at the SPL share that our colleague and friend Shima has passed away.

Eduardo Shimahara (fondly known as Shima) was born in Brazil and has been living in Cape Town since 2013.

He left a career as a mechanical engineer to teach and work in the field of sustainability. He worked as the Director of Sustainability and Innovation at Anima Educação (a private university group in Brazil). In 2012 he published an eBook about innovative educational programmes, titled “Around the world in 14 schools”. This led him to SPL’s Sustainable Development programmes hosted at the Sustainability Institute. He completed the PGD and MPhil programmes in 2013-2014, with food and community as his research focus.

Shima has led various transformative educational journeys in our Sustainable Development programmes. The positive change he wished to create in the world will continue on through the young minds he inspired.

We would like to express our deepest condolences to Shima's family, friends, and students.

He will be missed, but his legacy will continue in the works and minds of his colleagues and students.
